WTA Elite Trophy Preview
The WTA Elite Trophy takes place in Zhuhai, China, at the Hengqin International Tennis Center. This tournament includes both singles and doubles competitions. It’s the sixth edition, with a break since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in mainland China.
This event is for women’s tennis, featuring 11 players ranked 9 to 19 in the year-end WTA singles ranking, along with an extra wild card given to a Chinese player. It’s often called a competition for players who didn’t make it to the WTA Finals. The tournament has a format where players are divided into four groups, and they play in a round-robin style. The winners of each group then move on to the semi-finals.
The event is part of the WTA 1000 series and is played indoors, thanks to a covered court. This means matches go on, no matter the weather outside. The court is hard, but it’s designed to be gentle on players’ joints and muscles.
Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus is the defending champion, and she won both the singles and doubles titles in 2019. She beat Kiki Bertens in the singles final and, alongside her partner Elise Mertens, triumphed in the doubles against Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara from Japan.
One unique aspect of this tournament is the court surface. It’s hard, like a regular tennis court, but it has a special cushioning system that makes the ball bounce differently. This system was also used at the Australian Open in the past, known as Rebound Ace, and it’s softer than the typical hardcourt, affecting the ball’s speed and bounce. The materials used for the court’s top layer play a role in the speed and friction of the game.
WTA Elite 2019 Winners
The WTA Elite Trophy is back after 2019. In that year, Aryna Sabalenka, fourth seed, defeated the top-seeded Kiki Bertens 6-4, 6-2 in the final.
In doubles, Lyudmyla Kichenok and Andreja Klepač won by beating Duan Yingying and Yang Zhaoxuan 6-3, 6-3. Past singles champions include Venus Williams, Petra Kvitova, Ashleigh Barty, and Julia Goerges.
