- The City manager calls for fair scrutiny in the world of football finances.
Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, recently aimed the perceived inconsistencies in criticisms directed at football club expenditures.
With Chelsea’s recent spending nearing the £1 billion mark under new owner Todd Boehly, Guardiola pointed out the scrutiny Man City would face had they splashed a similar amount.
Chelsea’s acquisitions, including the recent £58 million signing of ex-City midfielder Romeo Lavia, have raised eyebrows. Guardiola addressed these issues, stressing that while City has faced criticism for its spending habits, its expenditures have spanned over seven years.
The Man City manager said,
“I couldn’t sit here. If we spent what Chelsea spent in the last two transfer windows, you would kill me.”
He added that if City spent like Chelsea, they would be “dead” from global criticisms, while Chelsea seems to face lesser scrutiny for similar or even higher spending.
Guardiola’s statements come amidst concerns over Kevin De Bruyne’s hamstring injury and the potential need for new acquisitions. However, the club is determined to maintain its financial standards and approach.
